An analysis and comparison of manuscript, smartphone and Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) within my songwriting process
    Canning, Brett Peter ( 2021)
This study is an analysis and comparison of manuscript, smartphone and DAW within my songwriting process and explores the use of these three technologies within the context of my songwriting process. The core question asked is; how does the process of documenting musical ideas and lyrics using each technology individually, rather than in combination, affect or influence my songwriting process? This question is addressed through responses to three core sub-questions; how does my songwritng process change when I am writing with manuscript, for example, outside of the digital realm? What is the impact of the smartphone, for example, on the way I write and shape a song or composition? Do the capabilities of the DAW, for example, enhance or hamper my songwriting process? The conceptual framework and methodological approach to this study are rooted in reflective practice. Data collected during the course of this investigation is analysed and comparisons are made. The findings of this enquiry provide responses to each of the three core sub-questions mentioned above. Further, significant artistic growth is documented and a deeper understanding of the role of manuscript, smartphone and DAW technologies within my creative practice is gained. This deeper understanding may inform further study.
