Intercultural contact, ethnocentrism and the mediating role of epistemology
    PRICE, FIONA SWEE-LIN ( 2000)
This thesis describes a model which proposes that level of epistemology mediates the relationship between intercultural contact and ethnocentrism. This model was tested by examining the effects of participation in a secondary school cultural exchange program, on the grounds that the cultural immersion characteristic of such programs constitutes cognitive conflict under circumstances which should stimulate epistemological development. The intercultural knowledge, epistemological level and ethnocentrism of 128 adolescents aged 14-18 were tested before and after participation in an exchange program. These results were compared with those from a demographically similar group of 72 adolescents, who had applied for information on exchange programs but did not go during the year of testing. The results of the study supported the proposed model.
