There are many problems connected with the subject of Art. The greatest, of course, is the problem of Arts own nature. This essay attempts, in the light of common sense principles, to study the nature of art, and, armed with the conclusions from that study, to offer some solution to the chief allied problems. In one sense, the scope is extremely broad; for the essay aims at a philosophy of art. In another sense, the scope may be considered to be very narrow; for, apart from certain obvious assumptions, the essay is self-contained; 'and, seeking to evolve a rounded, coherent theory of art, it sacrifices to this end whatever does not seem to promote its attainment. I should like to record my thanks to members of the School of English Language and Literature, for help and encouragement in the writing of this thesis.
