ItemStudies in the Peshitta gospels : an examination of four groups of Peshitta gospel words and their contribution to the study of the Peshitta as a revisionFalla, Terry C., 1940- (University of Melbourne, 1971)This thesis demonstrates, by means of the study of word-groups, a method which allows research into the history and character of the Peshitta Syriac text of the Gospels. The method is based on the author's lexicographical work which was designed as a key to the Peshitta Gospels with the intention of providing an aid for research in those Gospels and i n the Syriac Versions generally, and for the student of the New Testament i n his study of the Peshitta text and the Syriac language. This method has proved i t s e l f valuable for textual c r i t i c i s m, theology and interpretation; the study of l i t e r a r y techniques: a l l i t e r a t i o n , assonance, paronomasia, rhythm and parallelism i n the Peshitta text; the study of sources of influence on the Peshitta: the Old Syriac Gospels, the Peshitta, Hebrew and Greek texts of the Old Testament, Syriac Christian l i t u r g y , early Syriac Christian l i t e r a t u r e , and the thought and culture of the Syriac speaking community. Above a l l t h i s method has made possible the discovery of the c o l l e c t i v e authorship of the Peshitta Gospels as well as there being a relationship between them.
