Active and passive immunization of the horse against tetanus
    Liefman, Charles Edward ( 1977)
The first experiment described in this thesis was carried out. as a Commonwealth Serum Laboratories project to introduce a new tetanus toxoid preparation into veterinary practice, and was performed in conjunction with Dr. D. T. Oxer.D.V.Sc. Upon reviewing the literature for this experiment, and a paper "The use of vaccines and antisera in horses" (Victorian Veterinary Proceedings, 1966-67, p. 95-97) the lack )f published data in veterinary literature and the variable state of the recommendations in veterinary texts on tetanus prophylaxis became apparent. As the necessary horses were available for experimentation, proposals were prepared to carry out a series of experiments to clarify this situation. .I am extremely grateful to the Director, C.S.L., for granting permission to carry out these experiments and present the results as this thesis. The preparation of the proposed aims of this stud" and the organization and performance of the field work involved were my responsibility. f1?. D. Eggleton ?.Sc.- and his staff carried out the serum assays which are such a necessary part of this study. I acknowledge the assistance of rir. W. A. Geering, ?.V.Sc., 11.R.C.V.S. in planning these experiments and Dr. J. C. Trinca, 1.8., B.S., F.A.C.A., for advice. I am very indebted to fir. P. F. Lewis, 8.V.5c., f1.A.C.V.S. for his continued encouragement and particularly for the translation of most of the European references used. ?1? thanks also go to the staff of the C.S.L. Woodend Field Station who patiently carried out the extra duties these experiments placed on their daily work load.
