    Internet of Things for Structural Health Monitoring

    The Internet revolution led to the interconnection between people at an unprecedented scale and pace. The ability of the sensor networks to send data over the Internet further enhanced the scope and usage of the sensor networks. The Internet uses unique address to identify the devices connected to the network. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) implies monitoring of the state of the structures through sensor networks in an online mode and are pertinent to aircraft and buildings. SHM can be further divided into two categories: global health monitoring and local health monitoring. Continuous online SHM would be an ideal solution. SHM is performed by using acoustic sensors, ultrasonic sensors, strain gauges, optical fibers, and so on. Video cameras can also be used for SHM. SHM can be achieved in real-time and rich analytics. With the advent of smart sensors—sensors with programmable microprocessors, memory, and processing—has reduced load of central data processing, communication overhead while proving continuous SHM status.

    Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges Using Advanced Non-destructive Testing Technique

    This paper presents an integrated framework for structural health monitoring of bridges by using advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technique in conjunction with computational modelling. First, the structural characteristics of the Eltham Trestle Bridge under train loading were monitored using the combination of the 3D optical measurement system and IBIS-S. The results demonstrate that, in conjunction with computational modelling, the NDT can capture the structural health conditions of the bridge by analysing the natural frequencies and deformation profiles of the critical members of the bridges. Then, the developed framework also takes into account the impact of extreme events (e.g. truck impacts and earthquakes) by using a reliability-based model. Finally, using the Montague Street Bridge as a case study, it shows that proposed framework has the capability of predicting the residual life of a bridge subject to both progressive deterioration and extreme events throughout its service life.

    Urban Analytics Data Infrastructure: Critical SDI for Measuring and Monitoring The National and Local Progress of SDGs

    This chapter describes an innovative Spatial Data Infrastructure to support urban analytics and urban research capabilities focused on Australian cities, called Urban Analytics Data Infrastructure (UADI). The UADI provides opportunity for multi-disciplinary, and cross-jurisdictional analytics. The chapter highlights the UADI capabilities to be adopted for deriving the SDG indicators as a response to the UN-GGIM strategic framework 2017 { 2021 technical requirements.

    Infrared Thermography for Detecting Subsurface Defects of Concrete Structures

    Delamination is one of the serious types of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. It could cause concrete spalling, exposed steel bars, and ultimately affects the structural integrity of concrete structures. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-destructive technique which could potentially detect the delamination by capturing thermal contrast (∆T) on concrete surface caused by the heat flow disruption within the concrete due to subsurface anomalies. However, the optimum time and environmental conditions for IRT data collection are still unclear. In this study, an experimentally validated numerical model was developed to investigate the effect of a range of environmental conditions and defect characteristics on the IRT inspection outcomes. The results show that, under direct solar irradiation, the total heat flux input plays an important role in the development of thermal contrast ∆T instead of flux rate. Furthermore, delamination depth and size are two critical parameters that affect IRT results.

    Life-cycle performance of a bridge subjected to multiple heavy vehicle impacts

    Purpose - The purpose of this study is to develop a numerical framework to predict the time-dependent probability of failure of a bridge subjected to multiple vehicle impacts. Specially, this study focuses on investigating the inter-relationship between changes in life-cycle parameters (e.g., damage size caused by vehicle impact, loss of initial structural capacity, and threshold intervention) and bridges probability of failure. Design/Methodology/Approach - The numerical procedure using MATLAB program is developed to compute the probability failure of a bridge. First, the importance and characteristics of life-cycle analysis is described. Then, model for damage accumulation and life cycle as a result of heavy vehicle impacts is discussed. Finally, the probability of failure of a bridge subjected to vehicle impacts as a result of change in life-cycle parameters is presented. Findings - The results of study show that damage size caused by both vehicle impacts and loss of initial structural capacity have a great impact on the long-term safety of bridges. In addition, the probability of failure of a bridge under different threshold limits indicates that the structural intervention (e.g., repair or maintenance) should be undertaken to extend the service life of a bridge. Research Limitations/Implications - The damage sizes caused by heavy vehicle impacts are based on simple assumptions. It is suggested that there would be a further study to estimate the magnitude of bridge damage as a result of vehicle impact using the full-scale impact test or computational simulation. Practical Implications - This will allow much better predictions for residual life of bridges which could potentially be used to support decisions on health and maintenance of bridges. Originality/Value - The life-cycle performance for assessing the time-dependent probability of failure of bridges subjected to multiple vehicle impact has not been fully discussed so far.

    In this second volume, Managing Air Quality and Energy Systems, the reader is introduced to the general concepts and processes of the atmosphere, with its related systems. Heat pumps capture heat energy from low-grade heat sources such as ambient air, ground, and waste heat streams and upgrade to a higher temperature level for useful applications. This entry includes a brief history, fundamentals, classifications, applications and performance parameters of heat pumps. Working principles of the thermoelectric heat pump, the absorption heat pump, the gas compression heat pump and the vapor compression heat pump are explained. Performance parameters of the heat pump systems (coefficient of performance, energy efficiency ratio, primary energy ratio, and ambient energy fraction) are presented. The short-term and long-term greenhouse gas saving potential for the use of heat pumps are discussed.

    Green Buildings in Makassar, Indonesia

    Indonesia has one of the world’s largest populations, which creates a demand for buildings. Construction and operation of buildings have impacts on environment. To create sustainable cities, Indonesia applied the smart cities concept and selected Makassar as one of three role model cities. This chapter explores the current situation in Makassar with respect to green building adoption, the challenges faced and opportunities in market transformation. The Green Building Council of Indonesia (GBCI) in Makassar is heavily involved with market transformation for green building practices and has four main activities: market transformation, training and education, green building certification and stakeholder engagement. GBCI has developed the GREENSHIP rating tool, an assessment system covering categories associated with the green building concept as it applies to Indonesia. The embracing of the green building concept, however, is still low in Makassar. Market transformation is a challenging task, and there is still a lack of formal education programmes and courses available to architects, engineers and the construction industry to drive the transformation. The initial higher cost of green building presents as a major barrier to the uptake of green building even though these costs are mitigated after a period of 4–5 years through a reduction in operational costs. Government regulations that support green building practices and education of the community about the benefits of green building may support/improve uptake of green building.

    Initial Investigation into the Effectiveness of Australian Ports’ Governance and Management Structures

    The ninth chapter considers effectiveness of port governance and management structures in Australia. It briefly reviews Australian port reform, before considering private, local and international investment in Australia; the make-up of investors in major city ports in Australia; and the need to carefully assess foreign investment in critical infrastructure. Asset recycling in Australia is discussed. Factors identified from focus group discussions (in Australia) with key port stakeholders that help improve or act as obstacles to governance/policy, and that help improve or hinder management structures in ports, are also presented.
