    On state estimation for nonlinear systems under random access wireless protocols

    This article is dedicated to Eduardo D. Sontag on the occasion of his 70th birthday. We build upon fundamental stability concepts developed by Sontag, such as input-to-state stability and its related properties, to study a relevant application in industrial internet of things, namely estimation for wireless networked control systems. Particularly, we study emulation-based state estimation for nonlinear plants that communicate with a remote observer over a shared wireless network subject to packet losses. To reduce bandwidth usage, a stochastic communication protocol is employed to determine which node should be given access to the network. Each node has a different successful transmission probability. We describe the overall closed-loop system as a stochastic hybrid model, which allows us to capture the behaviour both between and at transmission instants, whilst covering network features such as random transmission instants, packet losses and stochastic scheduling. We then provide sufficient conditions on the transmission rate that guarantee an input-to-state stability property (in expectation) for the corresponding estimation error system. We illustrate our results in the design of circle criterion observers.

    Extremum seeking control for nonlinear systems on compact Riemannian manifolds

    This paper formulates the extremum seeking control problem for nonlinear dynamical systems which evolve on Riemannian manifolds and presents stability results for a class of numerical algorithms defined in this context. The results are obtained based upon an extension of extremum seeking algorithms in Euclidean spaces and a generalization of Lyapunov stability theory for dynamical systems defined on Rimannian manifolds. We employ local properties of Lyapunov functions to extend the singular perturbation analysis on Riemannian manifolds. Consequently, the results of the singular perturbation on manifolds are used to obtain the convergence of extremum seeking algorithms for dynamical systems on Riemannian manifolds.

    Coordination of blind agents on Lie groups

    This paper presents an algorithm for the synchronization of blind agents evolving on a connected Lie group. We employ the method of extremum seeking control for nonlinear dynamical systems defined on connected Riemannian manifolds to achieve the synchronization among the agents. This approach is independent of the underlying graph of the system and each agent updates its position on the connected Lie group by only receiving the synchronization cost function.

    Extremum Seeking Methods for Online Automotive Calibration

    The automotive calibration process is becoming increasingly difficult as the degrees of freedom in modern engines rises with the number of actuators. This is coupled with the desire to utilise alternative fuels to gasoline and diesel for the promise of lower CO2 levels in transportation. However, the range of fuel blends also leads to variability in the combustion properties, requiring additional sensing and calibration effort for the engine control unit (ECU). Shifting some of the calibration effort online whereby the engine controller adjusts its operation to account for the current operating conditions may be an effective alternative if the performance of the controller can be guaranteed within some performance characteristics. This tutorial chapter summarises recent developments in extremum seeking control, and investigates the potential of these methods to address some of the complexity in developing fuel-flexible controllers for automotive powertrains.

    Multi-agent gradient climbing via extremum seeking control

    A unified framework based on discrete-time gradient-based extremum seeking control is proposed to localise an extremum of an unknown scalar field distribution using a group of equipped with sensors. The controller utilises estimates of gradients of the field from local dithering sensor measurements collected by the mobile agents. It is assumed that distributed coordination which ensures uniform asymptotic stability with respect to a prescribed formation of the agents is employed. The framework is useful in that a broad range of nonlinear programming algorithms can be combined with a wide class of cooperative control laws to perform extreme source seeking. Semi-global practical asymptotically stable convergence to local extrema is established in the presence of bounded field sampling noise.

    Improving L₂ Gain Performance of Linear Systems by Reset Control

    In this paper, new Lyapunov-based reset rules are constructed to improve C2 gain performance of linear-time-invariant (LTI) systems. By using the hybrid system framework, sufficient conditions for exponential and finite gain C2 stability are presented. It is shown that the C2 gain of the closed loop system with resets can be improved compared with the base system. Numerical example supports our results.

    Online optimization of spark advance in alternative fueled engines using extremum seeking control

    Alternative fueled engines offer greater challenges for engine control courtesy of uncertain fuel composition. This makes optimal tuning of input parameters like spark advance extremely difficult in most existing ECU architectures. This paper proposes the use of grey-box extremum seeking techniques to provide real-time optimization of the spark advance in alternative fueled engines. Since practical implementation of grey-box extremum seeking methods is typically done using digital technology, this paper takes advantage of emulation design methods to port the existing continuous-time grey-box extremum seeking methods to discrete-time frameworks. The ability and flexibility of the proposed discrete-time framework is demonstrated through simulations and in practical situation using a natural gas fueled engine.

    Stability and Persistent Excitation in Signal Sets

    Persistent excitation (PE) conditions have been widely used to analyze stability properties of various parameter identification algorithms and to establish uniform global asymptotic stability (UGAS) for a large class of nonlinear time-varying systems. In order to generalize such conditions to a more general setting, a new PE condition is proposed with three basic ingredients: a signal set to represent a family of time functions (e.g., trajectories); a pseudo distance measure to describe the convergence; and some binary relations (e.g., state-to-output relations). Closely related to detectability, this PE condition is a necessary condition to guarantee UGAS. Under uniform global stability and an integral inequality, it becomes a sufficient condition of UGAS. A novel concept: M-pair, which aims at simplifying the checking of the PE condition, is introduced. By using M-pair, it is possible to simplify the structure of the referred signal set (in the spirit of the classic Krasovskii-LaSalle theorem) and to extend the dimension of the reference signal set (similar to the Matrosov theorem). Thus, the framework of M-pair not only unifies these well-known results, but also generates more flexibility in checking the PE conditions. When applied to nonlinear switched systems, three new tools to verify the PE condition are obtained. Finally, an example illustrates that a nonlinear time-varying switched system with arbitrary switching can be shown to be UGAS without using a common Lyapunov function.
