The protection of cultural heritage and archaeological sites in conflict zones: the case for Iraq
    Argirides, Andrea ( 2017)
On behalf of the Australian nation and through the direction of the Australian Government, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) effects the provision of peacekeeping and peace enforcement activities, missions of diplomacy, humanitarian and disaster relief operations as documented in the Defence White Papers. Considering the increase of conflicts in the Middle East, and focusing on the destruction and removal of cultural heritage, and the almost constant civil strife being experienced in Iraq, the Australian Government must consider expanding the responsibilities of the ADF to undertake cultural and archaeological heritage protection. This will require enhanced capability and awareness of the importance of cultural and archaeological heritage protection during the conduct of all types of military operations, especially when operating outside Australia. Therefore, using Iraq as a case study, this PhD research explores a number of issues pertaining to the protection of cultural and archaeological heritage in conflict zones, and how best the ADF can protect such heritage during armed conflict.
