Melbourne's art deco & international style
    Baillieu, Ted ( 1976)
This study began with a survey of Melbourne and suburbs and the photographing of a number of buildings. These buildings represented, I believed, the diverse architecture that spanned the International Style and Art Deco in Melbourne. Included in this survey was an attempt to uncover basic information by means of a questionaire (see Appendix 8.2). Unfortunately, this was not altogether successful although some interesting points were revealed (see comments on procedure in section 6.0). The result of the survey was a bank of examples of Melbourne architecture of the thirties. This was supplemented by the pages of the contemporary numbers of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects Journal. These examples were selective.in that they all exhibited an abstention from classical ornament and traditional composition. Concurrent with this work went the review of the articles of the R.V.I.A.J. and the establishment of a bibliography which might assist future rsearch. A review of the traditional Australian historiography view of this period, and an attempt to define the nature of the styles of architecture that were influential, followed. Finally, using the examples collected, an analysis of the characteristics of the style and a typological breakdown were attempted.
