The structure of agriculture in south-west Gippsland, 1963-1973
    Brinsmead, G. S. J. ( 1974)
This research paper investigates the structure and pattern of agriculture for the period 1963 to 1973 in an area of South-West Gippsland. The physical characteristics of the area are found to be conducive to a range of agricultural activities, and the area possesses a well developed set of service facilities. The basic data for the investigation is provided by questionnaires completed by a sample of 157 farmers. The data indicated that for the period 1963 to 1973 28% of farms had changed operators, 20% of farms had increased in size and 28% of farmers had altered their farms dominant activities with the importance of beef cattle production increasing significantly, the number of dairy farms decreasing slightly, and sheep and pig activities declining markedly. Analysis of milk marketing patterns showed basically a pattern of supplying the nearest factory. Melbourne metropolitan stock markets dominated the sale of beef cattle and sheep from the area, however, local markets had a more even share in the sale of dairy cows and calves. Better prices and greater buyer competition attracted sellers to metropolitan markets, whereas local markets were used for reasons of convenience and local loyalty.

The pattern and distribution of the urban hierarchy in the Swan Hill area
    Raulings, A. J. ( 1968)
The aim of this study is to prove that a hierarchy of central places exists in the area around Swan hill in northwestern Victoria and southwestern New South Wales. Methods used in similar studies in other areas of the western world have been adapted for use in this study. The urban hierarchy was defined on the basis of the population and functions of each centre and was found to have five main groups. The actual pattern and distribution of the hierarchy was compared with various models proposed by Christaller and others. As was expected, there were a number of local factors which distorted the actual pattern observed and this prevented comparison with any one model. The main factors affecting the location and size of centres of the hierarchy are the railways, the rural population density and road traffic.

The development of the manufacturing industry at Sunshine
    Popp, Edith ( 1972)
In tracing the pattern of urban and industrial sprawl (Fig. s ) of the Melbourne Metropolitan Area, the greater rate of growth towards the east and south of the Central Business District is conspicuous. This comparative slower growth in the Western suburbs has recently engendered the feeling among various sections in the community that they are deprived in facilities and do not have the force of attraction radiated by the south and east. This community feeling was strongly manifested at a public meeting on the twenty-ninth of October, 1972. The meeting broke up into seminar groups in which grievances were discussed, recommendations noted and action groups formed while another meeting was subsequently organized (see Appendix). This deprivation even seems to extend to academic levels since research has revealed that very few studies exist of western suburbs in comparison to those in the east and south. No previous work has been written on the industrial development of the Study Area, consequently presenting an opportunity and need for investigation. The aim of this thesis is to discuss and analyze the development of the manufacturing industry in the Study Area from its beginnings to the present period in the hope that it may provide some kind of starting point for more detailed studies.

A history of Australian coastal shipping 1900-1970
    Pemberton, Barry ( 1971)
This thesis covers the period of Australian coastal shipping after the turn of the century up to the end of 1970.. Such a broad topic as this>of necessity requires an equally broad treatment of events. While I have tried to explain the course of events during those seventy years I have not, for the reason of space, concerned myself with detailed study of either the cargoes carried or the waterfront strikes and stoppages which have prevented it although these two aspects are equally interesting.

Central Victoria: an analysis of change, 1838-1865: an historical geography of the Amherst-Talbot region, with emphasis on change in land usage and settlement
    Lancashire, Carol I. ( 1976)
The aim of this study is to examine the early development of the Amherst and Talbot region, located north of Ballarat within the County of Talbot. The study area is shown in relation to Ballarat and Maryborough on Map 1. These townships originated during the gold era, in a region of well-established pastoral occupancy. The nature of this rural development, the inter-relationships between the towns and the rural area, and the linkages with other parts of the colony, must be understood in order to postulate processes of change and stages of development in the area.
