    This thesis covers the period of Australian coastal shipping after the turn of the century up to the end of 1970.. Such a broad topic as this>of necessity requires an equally broad treatment of events. While I have tried to explain the course of events during those seventy years I have not, for the reason of space, concerned myself with detailed study of either the cargoes carried or the waterfront strikes and stoppages which have prevented it although these two aspects are equally interesting.
