    Enabling performance careers: Training for excellence in the context of arts entrepreneurship education

    Invited paper presented at Art in Motion 2016: Training for Excellence, 24-25 June 2016 The creative industries have undergone systemic changes which have reimagined how content is produced, distributed and consumed. Within the current occupational climate of dwindling funding and tenured positions, performing artists may struggle to achieve technical competence on account of sub-standard training and preparation, feel compelled to execute their craft in poorly designed work (performance) environments under prolonged pressure, and sacrifice their work-life balance. Research literature in the domains of dance, theatre and music shows that the stress exerted by such risk factors can substantially hinder physical and mental health, thereby disabling performance quality, artistic resilience and career longevity. In this presentation, my definition of performance ‘excellence’ encompasses two perspectives. The first, a task-specific/skill competency perspective focusing on internal enabling factors such as optimal learning strategies, practice quality, motivation, performance-related musculoskeletal injury prevention, and mental skills training incorporating positive psychology principles, effective goal setting, individual zone of optimal functioning, and anxiety management. The second perspective extends into external enabling factors: the skills and attributes that developing artists need to take advantage of employment opportunities in a diverse range of industry sectors. The foundation for a successful (meaningful, satisfying and sustainable) performance career is enabled through skills in marketing, grant writing, business and financial skills, and events management, to execute the skills of their craft within (potentially compromised) socio-economic contexts. In order for artists to flourish as employable, enterprising practitioners in today’s society, they require a robust training program alongside their principal music speciality. This heralds the need for traditional tertiary arts education institutions to offer comprehensive professional development through the emerging discipline of arts entrepreneurship education. To address this challenge, IgniteLab has been developed as a extra-curricular professional development program for Melbourne Conservatorium of Music students. Through the emerging discipline of arts entrepreneurship education, IgniteLab augments the traditional conservatoire education, encouraging students to develop entrepreneurial skills and strategies to develop their own pathways. This program will be profiled as a case study to exemplify the challenges and triumphs of integrating career planning into training for excellence.
