    Sociophonetic variablity of postvocalic /t/ in Aboriginal and mainstream Australian English

    This paper analyses post-vocalic /t/ variability in controlled speech across two groups, both L1 Aboriginal English and mainstream Australian English speakers. Data were collected in Warrnambool, a small community in western Victoria (Australia). While both Aboriginal English and mainstream Australian English speakers used canonical aspirated [tʰ] a range of other variants were observed. The Aboriginal English group used a greater number of variants overall, and tended toward “glottal” variants (full glottal stops, pre-glottalised stops, and ejective-like stops) whereas the mainstream Australian group preferred so-called “breathy” variants (affricates, fricatives); we attribute this to sociophonetic variability, potentially linked with voice quality and glottal timing. Overall, the study highlights some previously undocumented variation both within L1 Aboriginal English, and between L1 Aboriginal English and mainstream Australian English.

    Pitch accent variation and realization in interactive discourse in Australian English

    This paper examines pre-nuclear and nuclear pitch accent variation and realization in map task interactions for Standard Australian English. An analysis of pitch accent choice in accented words reveals that pitch accent type is not always critical to the realization of information structure categories; for instance in the case of informational focus participants often use a range of pitch accent shapes. Nevertheless nuclear bitonal accents (e.g. L+H* pitch accents) are scaled higher than simple H* pitch accents across the board in line with previous findings for other English varieties. Furthermore there is evidence of an interaction between dialog act, pitch accent choice and realization with more rising and/or higher scaled accents used in particular kinds of interactions.

    Intonational correlates of subject and object realisation in Mawng (Australian)

    A range of intonational devices can be used in the grammar of information and corrective focus marking in languages with relatively free word order. In this paper we explore whether nouns in the Australian Indigenous language Mawng are realised differently depending on syntactic function and focus. Results show that the pitch level associated with Subjects is higher in conditions of corrective focus compared to other utterance contexts and there is a strong correlation between focus and utterance position. Placing a word in a corrective focus context does not appear to have an effect on word duration in this corpus confirming that pitch register variation and intonational phrasing are the major prosodic cues associated with corrective focus in Mawng.

    Interpreting rising intonation in Australian English

    Australian English is referred to widely as a rising variety of English due to the prevalence of rising tunes in interactive discourse. Australian English subjects were required to listen to a series of rising stimuli that varied in terms of pitch level and pitch span and were asked whether they heard a question or statement. The results showed that both rise span and pitch level of the rise elbow influenced the pattern of responses. If both were relatively high, subjects were most likely to interpret the rise as a question, with fewer question responses when the rise elbow was relatively low and the pitch span narrow. The results provide limited evidence for two simple rises in Australian English, but also confirm a high level of phonetic gradience amongst rising tunes in this variety.
