    If we're not there yet, how far do we have to go ? A review of web metadata at the University of Melbourne

    The University of Melbourne instituted a metadata standard for web content in 1999. After several ad hoc reviews, we describe a case study in which we conduct a systematic, broad coverage review of the use of the institutional metadata standard across all web content. First we review the development of the institutional metadata standard, building on Dublin Core. Next we conduct an in depth review of practice, finding that Dublin Core and University of Melbourne metadata is sparsely implemented for reasons including changing authoring habits and evolving web content types. Finally a number of issues for future investigation are identified within the institutional context.

    CASE: A Situated Task Analysis Framework for CALL

    Socio-cultural theories on language learning examine the impact of social interaction within cultural environments upon cognitive development and learner performance. Such theories emphasise the emergence of learner strategies and subsequent linguistic proficiency through involvement in continuously unravelling situated activities. However, this view is seldomly integrated within Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) system design efforts as practitioners currently lack a holistic and integrative model for capturing, modelling and evaluating cognitive and social requirements of learner-computer interaction. Inresponse, we propose the CASE (Cognition, Activity, Social Organisation and Environment) meta-design model. Exploring the specific components of the model, we underscore the relevancy of Activity Theory and Scenario-Based Design to CALL system design. Finally, we posit that the CASE model approach will greatly assist CALL initiatives in quality-driven system design.

    Towards a General Model of Linguistic Paradigms

    Linguistic forms are inherently multi-dimensional. They exhibit a variety of phonological, orthographic, morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties. Accordingly, linguistic analysis involves multi-dimensional exploration, a process in which the same collection of forms are laid out in many ways until clear patterns emerge. Equally, language documentation usually contains tabulations of linguistic forms to illustrate systematic patterns and variations. In all such cases, multi-dimensional data is projected onto a two-dimensional table known as a linguistic paradigm, the most widespread format for linguistic data presentation. In this paper we survey a representative sample of paradigms and develop a simple relational data model. We show how XML technologies can be used to store and render paradigms. The result is a flexible and extensible model for the storage, interchange and delivery of linguistic paradigms.

    A Four-Level Model for Interlinear Text

    Interlinear text has long been a valuable device in language documentation and linguistic description. However, the task of creating, editing and publishing interlinear text is an onerous one. Interlinear text is governed by simple rules, yet laborious manual formatting in a word processor is the norm. A handful of specialized software tools facilitate the creation of interlinear text, permitting customizable views and alignment to audio and video. However, word processors and specialized software alike fail to deliver on a key promise of digitization, namely reusability. In order to facilitate reusability, we have developed a general-purpose conceptual model of interlinear text consisting of four levels: text, phrase, word and morph. The details of the model are informed by our analysis of a representative sample of current practice. We have implemented the model using standard XML technologies.
