ItemThe Maghrib before ColonialismPennell, CR ; Joffe, G (Routledge, 2023-11-20)Since pre-historical times, the Maghrib – today the countries of Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya – has experienced a vast array of intertwined histories and societies. Over time, its indigenous communities have had to engage with various external partners from different geographic and cultural environments that have both been influenced by and have influenced the region and each has, in consequence, contributed towards its complex contemporary domestic reality. This initial chapter, therefore, outlines those interactions within the region which set the scene for the detailed discussion that follows in subsequent chapters. The analysis it provides terminates in the 1830s, after the European imperial intervention began with the French occupation of Algeria in 1830, an intervention which has powerfully shaped the modern states of the region, both incorporating and challenging its prior historical experiences.

ItemA country with a government and a flag: the Rif War in Morocco, 1921-1926Pennell, C. R. (Middle East & North African Studies Press Ltd., 1986)The Rif War, which took place in Northern Morocco between 1921 and 1926 and which almost shattered Spain's protectorate there, as well as threatening France's hold over the rest of Morocco, is, perhaps the most important anti-colonial struggle of the pre-World War II era. Not only did it lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of Spanish soldiers - 10,000 of them in one battle alone in 1921 - but it also led indirectly to the Spanish Civil War and spurred on the nascent nationalist cause in Morocco itself. Yet the events of the war and the personalities of its leading protagonists, at least on the Moroccan side, are curiously little known. nor is the innovative nature of their convictions fully understood.
