The Lost World of Unspoken Horrors: Aharon Appelfeld’s Holocaust Universe
    Abramovich, D (Hybrid publishers, 2023-12-04)
This volume offers a close reading of five novels by Aharon Appelfeld (1982-2018), Israel’s most celebrated Shoah author. Fuelled by a desire to introduce this literary giant to foreign language readers, this illuminating collection of essays is a tribute to a prolific writer who, for more than four decades, won international acclaim for his subtle and enigmatic novels, which shimmer with premonitions of the unimaginable horror to come. Overflowing with lucid insights, this deeply reflective study demonstrates how Appelfeld’s stories, usually set in the years immediately before and after the destruction of European Jewry, transform memory into fiction and encase within their midst unfathomable depths in the search for meaning and healing.

    Albrecht Dürer's Material World
Wouk, EH ; Spinks, J ; Wouk, EH ; Spinks, J (Manchester University Press, 2023)
The painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important figures of the German Renaissance. This book accompanies the first major exhibition of the Whitworth art gallery's outstanding Dürer collection in over half a century. It offers a new perspective on Dürer as an intense observer of the worlds of manufacture, design and trade that fill his graphic art. Artworks and artefacts examined here expose understudied aspects of Dürer's art and practice, including his attentive examination of objects of daily domestic use, his involvement in economies of local manufacture and exchange, the microarchitectures of local craft and, finally, his attention to cultures of natural and philosophical inquiry and learning.

    Plague in Antiquity
    Jamieson, A ; Tully, C ; Hitchcock, L (Peeters Publishers, 2023)
This volume came about based on the recognition that the rise and spread of Covid-19, in order to both take advantage of the authors’ lived experiences and to situate the world’s recent experience of plague and its effects within a long-term historical framework as provided.by the texts and archeological evidence of the ancient Near East, Asia, and the Mediterranean. Our research has lead contemporary scholarship to consider the possibility that there will be an increasing acceleration of new and highly transmissible plagues, viruses and other diseases linked to the mass travel and trade that characterizes hyper-globalisation. As historians and archaeologists studying the civilisations of the most distant past, we felt that we had something to contribute to this conversation through providing a historical perspective, with the twin goals of relieving the social anxiety caused by pandemics and taking advantage of our present experiences to see how we might view our own research in a fresh, new light. Archaeologists and scholars of ancient history know that epidemic plagues and other environmental catastrophes are nothing new: disease and illness are clearly represented in the archaeological and historical record.

At the Heart of It: place stories across Darug and Gundungurra Lands
    Torpey, J ; Hurst, J (Western Sydney University Copyright © 2004-2022, 2014-03-25)
This is a free enhanced ebook located within the context of Ann McGrath’s and Peter Read’s ARC Linkage Project (LP100100427) “Deepening Histories of Place: Exploring Indigenous Landscapes of National and International Significance”, The Australian National University and Sydney University, 2011-2013. PhD student Julia Torpey, who interviewed more than thirty Indigenous people about their histories and storytelling, produced it. Some interviews have been selected here to appear in this ebook from the larger collection of filmed oral histories in place, in The Blue Mountains, Western Sydney and Sydney. This collection of films is not representative of a particular community organisation or ‘tribe’; it is representative of individual connection to place and history. The films in this eBook are illustrative of the diversity of storytelling, history, identity and connection to landscape that are encountered with individual Indigenous people. The result is an ebook that walks and talks and performs history, bringing histories told closer to listeners, readers and viewers. Copyright of the oral histories remains with the storytellers. The storytellers have agreed for their history to be downloadable, to be enjoyed in Country or elsewhere. Please look, listen and enjoy this history but do not copy, reproduce, sell or alter in any way.

Aëtiana IV: Papers of the Melbourne Colloquium on Ancient Doxography
    Mansfeld, J ; Runia, D ; Mansfeld, J ; Runia, D (Brill, 2018-03-22)
The articles collected here are based for the most part on papers read at the Colloquium “The Placita of Aëtius: Foundations for the Study of Ancient Philosophy,” held in Melbourne in December 2015. The Placita, a first century CE collection of systematically organised tenets in natural philosophy ranging from first principles to human physiology is incompletely extant in several later sources. Its laborious reconstruction and the identity of its author are discussed from various angles. The text of the treatise is further elucidated by a novel statistical exploration of what is extant and what is missing. Its relation to various currents in the history of Greek philosophy and its reliability are also examined in some detail.

Aëtiana V: An Edition of the Reconstructed Text of the Placita with a Commentary and a Collection of Related Texts
    Mansfeld, J ; Runia, DT ; Mansfeld, J ; Runia, D (Brill, 2020)
The present edition and commentary on the Placita has been a very long time in the making. In the case of Jaap Mansfeld, its origins go as far back as the research he did on ps.Hippocrates De hebdomadibus in the late 1960’s.1 David Runia first came into contact with doxographical texts when analysing Philo of Alexandria’s puzzling work De aeternitate mundi in the late 1970’s.2 We made the decision to work together on the Aëtian Placita in 1989 and the project entitled ‘Aëtiana: the Method and Intellectual Context of a Doxographer’ was born. The present volume consisting of four parts is the project’s culmination. Four preparatory volumes (in five parts) have preceded it.3 We will not again describe the project’s origins and development. The interested reader is referred to the Introduction to Volume 4, where a full account is given.
