Universities have a role to play in developing citizens and leaders who can be part of the transition towards a more sustainable future. This research project therefore sought to gain insight into how higher education institutions influence and develop environmental citizenship among students, starting from the the perspective of students. Focus groups were conducted with 30 students from the University of Melbourne who were identified as either studying in environmental fields or active in environmental activity on campus. The findings from this study hope to guide the University of Melbourne and similar institutions in further developing as sustainable universities and in further fostering environmental citizenship among students.
