Mariana's story is part of a peer-reviewed edited volume of women's life stories that draws on detailed ethnographic research of village women's lived experiences and how they, individually and collectively, have taken action to influence village development in Indonesia's multi-level governance structure under the new Village Law in Indonesia. The analysis identifies the processes of women's empowerment, their involvement in grassroots women's collective action, engagement with civil society organisations, and how women influence village institutions, policies, development spending and priorities, and new projects as well as social norms in communities. Mariana became the first female Hamlet Head in her village in Tanggamus district, in 2006, replacing her father. When FAKTA-DAMAR entered the village and began to offer gender awareness classes, Mariana immediately wanted to join. Mariana is now the coordinator of the FAKTA-DAMAR gender awareness classes for women, men, as well as teenage girls and boys in her village. These FAKTA-DAMAR activities have also extended Mariana's friendship networks with whom she could share her experiences and bolstered her capacities as a village official, particularly fostering her self-belief to address village meetings for the PKK and Posyandu. Mariana reflects that the knowledge and understanding gained through her involvement and training has created significant change in her household, especially regarding the fair distribution of domestic chores.
