This paper sets out to trace the successful development and implementation of an enterprise classification scheme (ECS) at the University of Melbourne. The University’s size and management model present special challenges to the introduction of a new standard or system. This paper describes a dual top-down (regulatory) and bottom-up (project-based) approach to implementing the ECS. The long-term sustainability of the ECS is supported by the development of an institution-wide community of practice. The paper examines the implementation of the scheme as part of project set up to restructure the Library’s shared drive.
