Broken Hill South was one of the largest of the Broken Hill lead-zinc mines and a major member of the Collins House group of companies. During the nineteen thirties it diversified into various other mining activities including a wide scale programme of mineral exploration. The mine itself closed in 1972 with the bulk of its operations being taken over by CRA, North Broken Hill and WMC. Inscription: "Fire Fighting Equipment Stretcher (2) 1-7-28" and "819-L" are written in ink below the photograph. "FIRE PROTECTION" is written in ink at the top of the page.
