Abstract
This article was written and published in August 2003 in Neos Kosmos English Edition. It is about the Cyprus Problem through the eyes of a young historian. I believe in the reunification of the island of Cyprus and that a historical opportunity was missed to negotiate a viable settlement that would have given both sides satisfaction and hope for the future. This article, despite its negativity, was written as an appeal to all Cypriots to understand where the politicians from both sides were taking the situation in August 2003. I was appealing to Cypriots to recognise the unique identities of the Cypriots, forged by a distinct past, and to be passionate about reunifying their island. I appeal to Cypriots to search within their real historical roots, as opposed to those introduced to the island, and to appreciate the commonalities between Orthodox and Muslim Cypriots. Cypriots need to reconcile the crimes and tragedies of the past by taking responsibility for them. Only if this happens will the wounds heal and a united, peaceful future be forged.
