Abstract
The enduring existence of the estate of Australian landscape painter Hans Heysen presented the opportunity for this study to determine what an artist's house, studio and personal collection can uncover about the artist's supply, knowledge and choice of artists' materials. This study was conducted primarily using sources derived directly from the Hans Heysen's estate 'The Cedars' which exists as a house museum in the Adelaide Foothills. These sources include documentary and object based evidence including works of art in oil on canvas between 1898 and 1918 and artists' materials remaining in the artist's studio. The use of complementary written and object based sources was able to determine Heysen's artists' materials purchasing patterns and preferred materials suppliers. It also provided evidence in relation to choice of artists' materials based on sound material knowledge and accessibility, and the development of a preferred use of a combination of commercially and artist prepared oil painting materials between 1898 and 1918. This initial research into the broader area of South Australian artists' materials suppliers has established a comprehensive foundation from which further investigation can be based upon and acts to complement current existing research into artists' materials suppliers nationally.
