Description
Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to examine how the history of conservation in western museums has influenced the development of conservation and ask whether this influence still strongly shapes the continuing evolution of current practice. The impacts of ethics and wider culture within conservation practice and the evolution of organisations in defining professional practice in relation to social meaning will be examined. The thesis will look at the influence of approaches from non-western cultures and contemporary art to see how they are changing approaches to practice and how this might impact the future of conservation.
