The file registration cards record the file number and file title. The occurrence of parts of files is rarely noted. Initially the series was conceived as both a file registration system and movement system. The movement function had ceased to be recorded by about 1972, the amount of space provided on the side of the card being inadequate. Red stamps indicate which files have been "archived". Some indication is given to which parts are "archived". Confidential files are occasionally marked although not consistently. Cross references to other file numbers are included where files have been amalgamated or cancelled. Whenever the numbering system or classification headings were altered, these cards were kept up to date. The system of manual registration began to break down in about August 1981 but the series did not cease until December 1982. The cards as registered appear to have been re-written at various times. No movement markings can be seen on any cards.
