Finding space: expanded scores as compositional tools for interdisciplinary practice
Yap, Kezia Shu Zan ( 2022)
This research considers the expanded musical score as a framework through which to develop a compositional practice as a form of post conceptual art. Drawing on extramusical ideas such as cultural dislocation and spatial experience, this project seeks to represent non-musical objects as score, instrument and musical vehicle. Through a series of studio-based experiments, this development of compositional practice also produces a secondary framework through which to better understand the artist’s parallel practices as composer and interdisciplinary artist.

Creating an interactive music diffusion system
    Wilkinson, James Westgarth ( 2019)
In this study I take a phenomenological approach to music composition, improvisation and sound system design. I apply the writing of author Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism to formulate an approach to composition and interactive design. I test whether it is possible to convert themes of Zuboff’s book into an interactive work of art which is relevant. I apply my research to the creation of an interactive sound installation based upon a Behavioural Value Reinvestment Cycle model. I explain my personal epoche, an interactive camera system, electro-acoustic music diffusion designs, audio software, and detail the development of the interactive music diffusion system design. I include descriptions of my compositions with accompanying sound recordings. A total of twelve compositions have been created for the purposes of this research. The music creation applies two approaches termed as either surveillance or conscious music. Surveillance music is composed by incorporating a camera for interactive outcomes. Conscious music compositions are works created in response to researching surveillance capitalism. To conclude I review and summarise my phenomenological experience and findings.

    Folio of Compositions
    Pickering, Christopher James ( 2020)
A Folio of Compositions for the Master of Music (Composition), by Chris Pickering, completed between 2018-2020. List of compositions: 1. The Straightened Arrow - For Orchestra (11:49) 2. Ceiling of Clouds - For Alto Saxophone, Acoustic Guitar, and Harmonium (5:30) 3. Sous Le Tourbillon - Suite for Piano (24:52) 4. Splinters of Diamond Light - For Orchestra (11:26) 5. Lesser Heroes - For Flugelhorn/Trumpet in C, Trombone, and Electric Guitar (8:31) The initial creative concept behind the folio was to investigate how the composer’s background as a songwriter with a contemporary pop influence could be explored within the expanded palette of contemporary classical composition techniques. The intention in undertaking larger-scale and more adventurous compositions was to explore how the composer’s sense of form and structure through pop songwriting – and the prominence of melody – could be applied within the extended durations and timbral textures of writing for larger groups, in more nuanced pieces of chamber music, and the challenges in additionally mastering scoring and orchestration techniques for various instruments.

The process of composing 1938: An Opera
    Clapp, Ashlee ( 2016)
In this thesis I will illuminate the process of composing music for the original music theatre work 1938: An Opera. This is a multilingual political satire based primarily on Australian historical events. I will focus on two main aspects of the work. Firstly, I will explicate the various stages of composition for songs in English. These stages include the phenomenology involved in creating musical ideas; the compositional approach; and the musical conceptualisation of dramatic narrative and development. Secondly, I will investigate the process of composing songs in languages other than English. This section will focus on songs in Cantonese and Yorta Yorta, an Australian Indigenous language. I will discuss my collaboration with translators and cultural and language mentors who helped me to overcome linguistic challenges, and increased my awareness of cultural subtleties arising from inclusion of languages I did not understand.
